Here are some updates on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and its impact on electric vehicle tax credits.
A tax credit was created to get more people to buy electric cars. There are some rules for getting this credit, but if you meet all the rules, you could get a $7,500 credit on your taxes. To claim the credit for new clean vehicles, you must have purchased the vehicle for your personal use and not for resale. The vehicle must have been made by a qualified manufacturer and its final assembly must have occurred in North America.
IRC Section 30D credit can reach $7,500 for qualifying clean vehicles. They can receive the credit for the battery and its components. The percentage depends on whether critical minerals were extracted in the US (or extracted or processed in any country with which the US has a free trade agreement in effect) or recycled in North America.
To qualify for the tax credit, vehicle prices are capped at $80,000 for vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks; $55,000 for sedans and others. Taxpayers with adjusted gross income under a certain amount can claim the credit. The credit is transferable to dealerships and there are recapture rules.
The IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) has added a new tax credit for taxpayers who buy a used, clean vehicle before January 1, 2033. The credit is worth up to $4,000 or 30% of the price of the car, whichever is less. The credit can be claimed once every three years for cars costing $25,000 or less.
To encourage the use of alternative-fuel vehicles, IRC Section 45W provides a new credit for qualified commercial clean vehicles acquired before January 1, 2033. The amount of the credit depends on the type of vehicle purchased and its weight. The credit is 30% of the cost of electric vehicles not powered by a gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine or the incremental cost of such vehicles. The maximum tax credit is $7,500 for vehicles weighing less than 14,000 pounds and $40,000 for other vehicles.
