If you haven’t been paying close attention to the automotive market in recent years, you may not be aware that the Ford Bronco nameplate has come back in a big way. This has been one of the most exciting new vehicle releases in recent years, and buyers are lining up to get their chance to own the new version of the Bronco. It fits nicely into the SUV category but delivers a little more versatility and off-road ability than many of the competitors. Also, it offers distinctly modern styling while still managing to pay respect to the past at the same time.
The Wagoneer comes in at the top end of the Jeep lineup as a luxury SUV. That fact comes through in the price – more on that later – and it is also seen in the high-end finishes inside the vehicle. Make no mistake, the Wagoneer is a very nice SUV, but there are some drawbacks.
One of the many nice things about going with a Ford Bronco is that you get to pick from three different engines when making your purchase. These engines range from 2.3L all the way up to 3.0L, and you can even pick between a manual and automatic transmission. The most powerful Bronco engine can provide you with 400 available horsepower, which is a solid number in an average-sized SUV.
A large 6.4L engine is available in the Wagoneer, which does deliver impressive power but also means you will be spending far more at the pump to keep filling up the tank. Whether or not the additional ongoing cost is worth it is a decision that you have to make.
Simply put, the Wagoneer is much larger than the Bronco. You might think of that as a big selling point in favor of the Jeep at first, but you will quickly see that the larger body does not necessarily mean extra comfort. The Bronco delivers more front legroom and more rear headroom, so you might find that it is the more comfortable SUV to sit in for long trips. And, of course, with a smaller body size comes improved maneuverability, so getting around crowded streets in the Ford will be a far less stressful task.
We mentioned this piece of the puzzle earlier, and now it’s time to get back to the topic of comparing prices for the Bronco and the Wagoneer. This is the point where a decision that might have originally seemed hard to make will become almost crystal clear – the Wagoneer is dramatically more expensive than the Bronco. Vehicle prices always vary depending on things like market conditions and packages offered, but it’s possible to pay twice as much for a Wagoneer compared to a Bronco.
Yes – twice as much. The range for a Ford Bronco typically falls somewhere between the mid-30K mark to the mid-40K mark, depending on trim. By contrast, the Wagoneer carries a hefty price tag that is usually north of $80K. There are some nice creature comforts to be enjoyed thanks to that investment, but it simply doesn’t add up to spend so much more for a vehicle that won’t practically deliver a huge upgrade over the very capable Bronco.
