When you need to purchase a new or used SUV, the Ford lineup is a great place to start your search. Some of the most popular SUVs on the road today come from Ford, including the two we will highlight in this article – the Expedition and Explorer. You may already know that there is a size difference between these two models, we’ll look at that factor and more below to help you decide which is best for you.

As the size difference between these two is probably the main point you will be weighing, let’s start with that factor. In the Ford Explorer, you will have access to nearly 88 cubic feet of cargo space once you fold the back seats down. That’s an impressive number for a vehicle of this size and it will allow you to pack up large loads for traveling, work, or whatever else you need to do. For many people, that much cargo space in an SUV is more than sufficient.
If it’s not enough for you, however, there is the Expedition to up the ante. With the standard Expedition, you can use nearly 105 cubic feet of cargo space – quite a sizable jump from the Explorer. And, as if that wasn’t enough, you can go even further by getting the MAX variant of the Expedition, which expands things up to over 121 cubic feet. At this point, you are talking about one of the biggest SUVs on the road, and you’ll have a machine that is capable of serving your family and some friends.
Beyond the space, you are probably interested in what features you can get with your new SUV. This discussion is more about trim packages than model selection. In other words, you can have plenty of high-end touches and features in either model as long as you go up toward the top end of the trim package range. For instance, both models start with an 8-inch touchscreen as part of the standard package. Other luxury features offered if you upgrade include wireless phone charging, the surround-view camera system, and keyless ignition.
Let’s be honest here – a family-sized SUV is not a sports car. While they have come a long way from their beginnings, SUVs still have the size and weight of a vehicle that doesn’t provide a lot of driving thrills. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun in them. The Explorer and Expedition have engine options that will get you up and running quickly.
With the Explorer, the base engine is a 2.3L EcoBoost that can offer up to 300 horsepower. For more power, think about going with the bigger 3.0L turbo V6 for 365 horsepower, or even the engine in the Platinum trim level that reaches 400 horsepower. On the other hand, buyers who are interested primarily in fuel efficiency rather than performance might want to look into the hybrid powertrain.
It’s certainly no surprise to find that the Expedition has some bigger engines available. Even the base model reaches 375 horsepower thanks to a strong 3.5L twin-turbo V6. With such a big SUV, you’re probably thinking that gas mileage will be bad news, but it isn’t quite what you’d expect – a 20 MPG highway rating means you won’t have to stop quite as often for fuel as with some competitors. You can also look for the Platinum package that has the 400 horsepower engine option, just as in the Explorer.
